Hollow vs. Solid

Solid balusters have the traditional wrought iron weight & appearance that our customers love. Hollow balusters come with an exceptionally smooth finish. They are especially installation friendly as they are more lightweight and save time during the cutting phase of your project.

All StairSuppliesTM Wrought Iron Balusters are intended for interior use.

The solid and hollow iron balusters are not much different in price. Why would one select one over the other? I am specifically looking for an indoor application although I may need an outdoor application as well.

    Hi Sherry,
The nice thing about hollow is that it’s less expensive to ship, and it’s easier to cut on the job site. Some people have a negative opinion of hollow, from their perception that it’s not as strong. While it’s not as ridged as solid, it’s definitely strong enough to be a safe product.

If you end up doing an outdoor section you would definitely want to go with the solid balusters, and you need to select the “Satin Black – Exterior” finish option. The standard finish that comes on the balusters isn’t rated for outdoor applications.

Will installing iron balusters make an already wobbly (wood baluster) staircase any stronger?

    2 years 4 months ago

    Hi Robert,

Thanks for your question. Replacing old worn down balusters with our iron balusters should provide strength and beauty to your staircase. Be sure to follow our installation guidelines for best results.

Is the shoe necessary to install the wrought iron bars?

    Thanks for the question gaylejackdson57,

The shoe is not structurally necessary, it just provides a more finished look.
