Use this to mount Iron Newels to your stairs. The total length of the Iron Newel Mounting Kit is 6 1/2″.
How is this installed? There are no instructions online!
You cut a hole in your stair tread / sub-flooring large enough to receive the collar of the mounting kit. You place the shoe on the iron newel, and then slide the newel into the mounting kit. Once you have it properly aligned you use the three large setscrews to hold it in place. The newel / mounting kit is put into the hole, and the four long screws are then fastened into your stairs / flooring. The shoe is lowered into place and held using epoxy.
I hope that answers your question, please let us know if you need additional information.
“Receive the colour”? What does that mean? Do you mean collar?
What is the diameter of the outer sleeve?
The newel posts are very tall — how do you cut them down to size? Is there particular type of saw / blade?
Thank you for your question, Shawn. We recommend using a metal abrasive cutting blade to cut the balusters. A hack saw will work as well.
Update: I bought a titanium-carbide saw blade for ferrous metals, and it cut through the solid iron like a laser. Better than the abrasive blade.. faster, and fewer sparks. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LFCLUUQ/
What is the recommendation if an iron Newell post mounting kit is not a viable Anchorage option?
We certainly recommend using the mounting kit for a secure iron newel installation. Since that’s not an option in this scenario, we would need a little more information about what you’re mounting into to advise you correctly. Could you provide us with some additional details?
How long is this? how far does the newel sink in?
Do you have a picture of what this looks like when it’s attached to the baluster and handrailing? In other words, when it’s complete? Does the mounting kit stick out?
Please see Completed Project #234 to see some great examples of the 16.5.5 Iron Newel with a Mounting Kit.
As you’ll see, the mounting kit does not stick out. Please let us know if you have any more questions!
