How is this installed? There are no instructions online!

You cut a hole in your stair tread / sub-flooring large enough to receive the collar of the mounting kit. You place the shoe on the iron newel, and then slide the newel into the mounting kit. Once you have it properly aligned you use the three large setscrews to hold it in place. The newel / mounting kit is put into the hole, and the four long screws are then fastened into your stairs / flooring. The shoe is lowered into place and held using epoxy.

I hope that answers your question, please let us know if you need additional information.

“Receive the colour”? What does that mean? Do you mean collar?

What is the diameter of the outer sleeve?

Support
2 years 2 months ago

Hi MH,

Good catch! That is supposed to say “receive the collar.” Also, the exterior of the shoe of the Iron Newel is 3 1/8″ square. Please let us know if you have any additional questions.

The newel posts are very tall — how do you cut them down to size? Is there particular type of saw / blade?

Support
2 years 11 months ago

Thank you for your question, Shawn. We recommend using a metal abrasive cutting blade to cut the balusters. A hack saw will work as well.

Update: I bought a titanium-carbide saw blade for ferrous metals, and it cut through the solid iron like a laser. Better than the abrasive blade.. faster, and fewer sparks. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00LFCLUUQ/

What is the recommendation if an iron Newell post mounting kit is not a viable Anchorage option?

Support
2 years 3 months ago

Hi Brian,

We certainly recommend using the mounting kit for a secure iron newel installation. Since that’s not an option in this scenario, we would need a little more information about what you’re mounting into to advise you correctly. Could you provide us with some additional details?

How long is this? how far does the newel sink in?

Support
2 years 29 days ago

Emma,

The Iron Newel Mounting Kit has a 6.5″ length. In most instances, this will sink all the way into the iron newel.

Do you have a picture of what this looks like when it’s attached to the baluster and handrailing? In other words, when it’s complete? Does the mounting kit stick out?

Support
2 years 29 days ago

Melissa,

Please see Completed Project #234 to see some great examples of the 16.5.5 Iron Newel with a Mounting Kit.

As you’ll see, the mounting kit does not stick out. Please let us know if you have any more questions!

Hi, in my application I would need to reverse the mounting bracket upside down. It is repair and the current newel post ends at the floor level. Will the shoe fit over the post to sit flush on the floor? I understand the ascetically the post being exposed is not optimal but I am looking for a fix now that will stabilize the newel post.

Support
9 months 16 days ago

Thanks for the question Dana,

I’m not sure if I’m understanding your question completely. If you are talking about installing the mounting kit upside down, with the long sleeve sticking up to receive the iron newel, the shoe will not fit over the mounting kit to sit flush with the floor. The shoe is designed to fit over the newel itself, not the sleeve of the mounting kit.

If my interpretation of your question is wrong, or if you would just like to discuss in more detail, please give us a call at (866) 226 6536 and one of our specialists will be happy to help you find the best solution.

How big of a hole do you have to cut into the floor for this mounting kit? What are the exact dimensions?

Support
9 months 16 days ago

Thanks for the question Mrs.

The outside dimensions of the part that goes into the floor/tread is 1/5″ square so that would be the size of the hole you would need to insert the kit into.

I’m not sure what you’re referring to with one-fifth of an inch square. Our Iron Newel Mounting Kit is designed to fit our 1 13/16″ square Iron Newels.

I hope this helps.

Can these iron newels be installed without the shoe similar to epoxying the balusters into the stairs?

Support
7 months 21 days ago

Thanks for the question K.

The newels can be installed without the shoe – it doesn’t provide any structural support, it just provides a more finished look.

How do you mount into a cement floor? The product numbers do not mach for the newel post and the floor mount, how do you know which one is right?

Support
6 months 11 days ago

Thanks for the questions randy,

Our Iron Newel Mounting Kit is not designed for concrete. To mount an Iron Newel in concrete, you would probably need to drill a hole slightly bigger than the newel and then fill it in with quickcrete or some kind of epoxy.

The Iron Newel Mounting Kit has it’s own product number and isn’t supposed to match any particular newel. Each of the mounting kits we sell can be used on multiple newels.

If you have any other questions, give us a call at (866) 226 6536 during our regular business hours (M-F, 9-5 EST).
