Product Description

Don’t compromise comfort for style… get the best of both worlds with 8071 False Stair Treads. Carpeted stairs provide warmth while false stair treads add character and timeless beauty. Crafted from high-quality wood, false treads can be customized to complement your balusters, newels, and false stair riser plates. With your home in mind, we design details such as a smooth bullnose along each outer edge and tread thickness to rest level with most styles of padded carpet. Carefully constructed, just for you!

Note, wood products may have varying amounts of staves due to the varying thicknesses of lumber that comes in each bunk and the width of the product.

Key Features

  • Use on Carpeted Stairs
  • Bullnose Trim
  • Returned Ends
  • Stain-grade

Mounting & Installation

Install False Stair Treads on a secure base, such as construction treads or a base built from dimensional lumber (2×10’s, 2×12’s, or 2×4’s). Anchor false treads to the base using construction adhesive and screws.

Because all homes have slight variations and unique angles, False Stair Treads are designed to be trimmed on-site for a tailored fit. If you need to trim the rounded returns, use a belt sander or palm sander with 60 grit sandpaper to achieve a consistent, smooth appearance.

Each side of a carpeted stairway that does not attach to a wall needs a False Stair Tread. To determine if a Right or Left Returned False Stair Tread is required, stand at the bottom of the stairway and look up. If the right side is exposed, then you need a Right Returned False Starting Step. If the left side is exposed, then you need a Left Returned False Starting Step. A False Stair Tread can also be placed on each side of a step to form a Double Returned End design. Left and Right Hand Returns add an extra 1 ¼” in width due to the attached return.

Clear Finish & Stain Information

StairSupplies™ offers several premium stain and finish options for our products, depending on the product’s use. For False Stair Treads, we offer both clear finishes and stains. Select a clear finish if you want to draw out the natural beauty and colors of the wood. If you prefer deeper, richer tones, our custom-mixed stains are the ideal choice for your False Stair Treads.

All tread materials and products that are used underfoot are finished with a Conversion Varnish. Strong and resilient, this varnish is standard in the hardwood flooring industry. Our team of experts apply this specialty product onto each stair tread using a spray applicator for even, flawless coverage to protect your treads against heavy wear and tear.

Wood Grain & Color Variation

At StairSupplies™ we believe that natural wood colors and visual textures add character to our products. With that in mind, we strive to match the grain and color of all of our wood products as closely as possible. However, due to the natural variation of wood products, there may be instances in which a perfect grain and color match is not possible. By ordering from StairSupplies™, you acknowledge that you are receiving a uniquely crafted product and there may be some variation in the grain and color of your wood products.

I am looking to do false treads but am looking for a dark ebony stain? Also are these to be nailed down or glued

    7 years 2 months ago

We have a lot of different stain options, I’d recommend you look at the options on Hard Maple & Red Oak to find exactly what you’re looking for. We typically recommend that you glue & nail them down.
Please let us know if you have any other questions.

If my math is correct, your 7.5″ risers should work with a 8.25″ rise step (rough framed) with .25″ left over. I am looking at parts 8076 and 8071 to dress my new staircase. My concern is part 8060 that will finish .75″ off of the concrete when used as the last step. Please confirm. Thank you.

    Hi Galen,

Good question. I’m not entirely sure how these measurements would work for your application. If you need custom pieces, we can certainly manufacture that. Please feel free to contact our sales team at with drawings and measurements to find out what exactly you’ll need for your project.

What are the length of these stair treads?

    4 years 11 months ago

    Hi Taylor,

We measure treads in terms of width, depth, & thickness. Without a return, these treads measure 6-1/2″ wide, 11-1/4″ deep, with a 1/2″ thick body, and a 1″ thick bullnose. With a return, they measure a total width of 7-3/4″ wide, and a total depth of 12-1/2″ to account for the size of the return.
