Clear Finish & Stain Information
StairSupplies™ offers several premium stain and finish options for our products, depending on the product’s use. For Starting Steps, we offer both clear finishes and stains. Select a clear finish if you want to draw out the natural beauty and colors of the wood. If you prefer deeper, richer tones, our custom-mixed stains are the ideal choice for your Starting Steps.
All tread materials and products that are used underfoot are finished with a Conversion Varnish. Strong and resilient, this varnish is standard in the hardwood flooring industry. Our team of experts apply this specialty product onto each stair tread using a spray applicator for even, flawless coverage to protect your treads against heavy wear and tear.
Wood Grain & Color Variation
At StairSupplies™ we believe that natural wood colors and visual textures add character to our products. With that in mind, we strive to match the grain and color of all of our wood products as closely as possible. However, due to the natural variation of wood products, there may be instances in which a perfect grain and color match is not possible. By ordering from StairSupplies™, you acknowledge that you are receiving a uniquely crafted product and there may be some variation in the grain and color of your wood products.

I need the tread only for an 8041 step. Right quarter turn only. Red oak, 48″ long. Is this available? If so, please indicate pricing.
Hi Billy,
We can definitely make just the tread. The pricing would be 50% of the price for the tread & riser. You can either order the full item online, and add a note, or you can place your order over the phone.
Please let us know if you have any other questions.
Please let me know if you can make the tread only for a right and left quarter turn, red oak, 66″ long
Hi Ken,
Yes, we can definitely make a double return tread at 66″ long. You can place an order for a 72″ piece and just let us know to cut it down, or you can place the order over the phone.
Let us know if you have any other questions.
Do you offer a wire brushed finish?
Unfortunately we don’t, we can offer a hand scrapped finish, but not wire brush.
How do you secure the first step to an existing staircase?
I’d suggest you check with your contractor to see their recommendation, as it partially depends on your specific application. However one way to do it is to use L brackets on the inside of the step to fasten it to the floor and to the first riser. You can then install the tread just like you install all your other treads (glue & nail).
I need over all 65″ (can do 66″ if that is standard). flush to the wall with a left hand return. It’s for a basement so nothing fancy, but I do want to stain it. The bottom stair lines up with the wall at the bottom, no wrap around. The riser is rotten and it looks easier to replace the whole thing rather than monkey with the pieces.
