Product Description

Perfect mitering on each corner means all end grain is concealed on the 4260 Box Newel. This creates a smooth appearance, accented by a narrow recessed channel around the top portion of the newel. At 6 ¼” square and 54” tall, the architectural details of this craftsman-style box newel are sure to make a lasting impression in your home.

Key Features:

  • Craftsman Style
  • Recessed Channel Detail
  • Stain-Grade
  • Easy Install

Mounting System:

To install your 4260 Box Newel, you will need the Box Newel Mounting Kit. Follow our Installation Video to ensure a secure fit. The Box Newel may be installed either on the surface of the stair tread or beside the tread. Due to their precise edges, we have found that Box Newels look best on a square starting step.

Handrail Attachment:

Join handrail to your 4260 Box Newel using a rail bolt kit. Many configurations allow handrail to mount directly into the newel; however, if your handrail is joining with your box newel on a rake, you may also require a gooseneck handrail attachment.

Splitting Box Newels:

In order to maintain a consistent appearance when handrail must terminate into a wall, we offer Split Box Newels. Attach the partial newel to the wall, and your handrail can be secured like normal. If you would like your Box Newel split in half, please select “Split in Half” in the dropdown menu above.

Clear Finish & Stain Information

StairSupplies™ offers several premium stain and finish options for our products, depending on the product’s use. For the Box Newels we offer both clear finishes and stains. Select a clear finish if you want to draw out the natural beauty and colors of the wood. If you prefer deeper, richer tones, our custom-mixed stains are the ideal choice for your Box Newels.

All of our stained and clear-finished Box Newels will be coated with Pre-Catalyzed Lacquer. Using the same quality product that cabinet makers require, this lacquer is designed to resist the natural oils from hands. We use this lacquer on all of our products that will be consistently touched, such as handrails, balusters, and newels. This layer of protection will keep your Box Newels looking smooth and stain free for years to come.

Wood Grain & Color Variation

At StairSupplies™ we believe that natural wood colors and visual textures add character to our products. With that in mind, we strive to match the grain and color of all of our wood products as closely as possible. However, due to the natural variation of wood products, there may be instances in which a perfect grain and color match is not possible. By ordering from StairSupplies™, you acknowledge that you are receiving a uniquely crafted product and there may be some variation in the grain and color of your wood products.

Can this newel be split?

Hi Jeff,
This newel can definitely be split, I apologize that we didn’t make it an option. We’ll get that fixed. In the mean time, you can place an order for a standard newel and in the notes request that it be split (there is a $35 charge to split the newel).
Let us know if you have any other questions.

Is this a solid (one-piece) post with a “hollowed-out base for mounting? Or is it constructed of multiple pieces put together? What is the weight of this post?

Hi Mark,
This newel post is hollow, it’s made up of 4 pieces mitered and joined in the corners, and then a cap is added on the top. The weight will vary greatly depending on the wood species, for something like poplar they will be as light as 15lbs, and for something like IPE could be as heavy as 25lbs.
Please let us know if you have any other questions.
